Criminal investigation opened following tragic Swiss nightclub fire that killed 40 in Crans-Montana

On the first night of January 2026, when everyone was celebrating New Year’s Eve around the globe, a tragic event occurred at the Crans-Montana ski resort in Switzerland.

The toll is heavy, many tourists including young adults have died or are still in critical condition. Swiss authorities reported 40 deaths and 116 injuries, of various nationalities, all of whom had come to the bar “Le Constellation” for the celebration.

This deadly fire in Crans-Montana questions the importance of safety in night clubs and more globally in the entertainment industry.

A criminal investigation has been launched to determine the managers’ responsibility in the incident. The couple, owners of the establishment, are investigated under suspicion of homicide by negligence, bodily harm by negligence, and arson by negligence. Preliminary reports suggest the fire may have started in the bar triggered by sparklers candles placed on champagne bottles too close to the basement ceiling.

Following this tragic night in Switzerland, French authorities have announced stricter safety controls in Parisian venues. These include respect of capacity limits, ensuring emergency exits remain clear, prohibiting the use of sparklers candles and open flames, and verifying the proper functioning of all safety equipment.

The night can be full of fun…but also carries risks such as alcohol, drugs, or unsafe conditions. It is therefore essential to respect safety rules to ensure that the party remains a safe environment for everyone.

On Sunday, January 4, hundreds of people gathered in Crans-Montana to pay tribute to the victims. The crowd observed a moment of silence and placed floral tributes outside Le Constellation, which remains hidden behind white tents while forensic investigations are ongoing.

All our thoughts and deepest support are with the families affected during this painful and heartbreaking time.
