Amnesia marks 50 years at the core of Ibiza’s music culture

Founded in 1976 byAntonio Escohotado, Amnesia first opened its doors under the name Workshop of Oblivion, a concept that would later become the club’s identity. Renamed Amnesia shortly after, a word derived from Greek, it embodies the club’s core values:  letting go, forgetting worries, embracing freedom, and fully living in the present moment. Half a century later, those values feel more essential than ever.

When a cryptic and mysterious yellow post appeared on various electronic music social media last week, and the same signal showed up on Amnesia’s Instagram account today, everything suddenly made sense: it was the first hint of Amnesia Ibiza teasing their 50th anniversary!

With a minimal, context-free, and deliberately anonymous post, it was a clear signal true to the club’s DNA, echoing Amnesia’s refusal to follow trends and its desire to preserve underground clubbing as a place of connection.

Remaining authentic in an ever-changing Ibiza

In an era where social media has reshaped nightlife, where capturing the moment often matters more than living it, where DJs are sometimes chosen for their follower counts rather than their musical vision, Amnesia has remained impassive. While Ibiza has followed trends, Amnesia has stayed true to itself.

During the last 50 years, Amnesia has been the true home of underground clubbing on the island, a place where music and atmosphere always come first. The room before the image. The moment before the market. A club where the dancefloor is not a set for content, it is the core of the experience.

What began as outdoor parties for hippies and locals has evolved into a legendary nightclub capable of welcoming more than 6,000 people. Today, Amnesia stands as one of the world’s leading electronic music venues, renowned for its cutting-edge sound system, iconic lighting, and an avant-garde musical program.

Over the decades, Amnesia hosted residencies who wrote history and helped define the island’s electronic music legacy such as Cocoon, La Troya, Cream, Music On, Elrow or Paradise to mention a few, and still until today with Pyramid, Resistance, Glitterbox and as rumors are already circulating, the possible return of Joseph Capriati’s Metamorfosi to Amnesia.

“We are Ibiza. We are born of freedom, diversity, fun, and community spirit. We don’t like limits. We refuse to be domesticated, and we will not succumb to the pressure of those who don’t want us to be ourselves.” As the club mentions on its website.

A Spirit of Rebellion

And this spirit of rebellion is at the core of Amnesia’s DNA. While the island increasingly drifts toward staged moments, curated content, and digital spectacle, Amnesia remains exactly what it was set out to be: a sanctuary of freedom, a place to live, to enjoy the moment, to forget everything except the music.

No distractions. No acting.
Just sound. Just dance. Just connection.

This year Amnesia turns 50, cementing its legacy in Ibiza’s underground music movement.

With anniversary events, special guest line ups and cultural collaborations unfolding throughout 2026, this celebration year promises to be one for the history books. Nowadays and after five decades, Amnesia is more than a club, it’s an institution which continues to prove that underground values can survive and thrive.
